Elif shafak 3 daughters of eve5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() At times the women (and indeed the men) here can seem like mouthpieces for ideological arguments rather than real characters, and the ending seems a bit rushed, with too many revelations coming too late.ĭespite all that, Three Daughters of Eve is a compelling – and timely – read. Her writing in English is a mixed bag, with passages of appealing sensuality and intelligence alternating with sections that are overwrought or clunky and in need of more rigorous editing. Turkish-born but London-based, Shafak is the most widely read female author in Turkey and, like other writers, she has on occasion fallen foul of the regime. The daughters of the title are the protagonists and her student friends: Shirin, a make-up-and-miniskirt-wearing Iranian rebel Mona, a devout, hijab-wearing Egyptian feminist and the likeable Perin herself – three very different modern Muslim women. ![]() Elif Shafak’s novel cuts between the present-day life of Perin – a wealthy Istanbul housewife – her childhood in the city in the 1980s and her time at Oxford at the start of the millennium, when she was embroiled in a scandal involving an unconventional philosophy professor. ![]()

In any case, I found only a handful of recipes I was interested in trying, until the final section which was focused on making bone broths and pho (!), which got me super excited. and a couple gave me pause, as I wasn't confident that they were well tested. Then again newbie cooks really need comprehensive recipes. I suppose these recipes would be most appealing to folks that lean toward less adventurous eating or cooking, as they were extremely simple. So this cookbook might be valuable as a nice summary, since Library wait lists for the original book are crazy long.Īs a cookbook, this was mediocre at best. I would imagine the book The Obesity Code would be the more comprehensive version of this. ![]() As an overview for the various components that contribute to our weight and health, this was absolutely excellent. ![]() The art of space ron miller5/24/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Miller's books include the Hugo-nominated The Grand Tour, Cycles of Fire, In the Stream of Stars, and The History of Earth. Moore takes liberties with the plot of King Lear but really, it wasn't like Shakespeare created it of whole cloth. Or at least love foul language mashed in with all the inappropriate witty remarks. This book is for twisted people who want to laugh at the world, themselves, and love language. Lots of nudity, gratuitous sex, violence, and twisted plots all set in a beautiful, albeit historically inaccurate time period. Or maybe what Shakespeare would write today for an HBO / BBC production. Full of hilarious anachronism, bawdy humor, and quick-witted word play The Bard himself would be proud of, he somehow manages to squeeze in some actual ideas about power and the things it does to people.įool is a bit like what one could expect if the creators of Monty Python, and Black Adder met up with Eddie Izzard and they all got drunk together and decided to rewrite Shakespeare without the iambic pentameter. Moore is irreverent and brilliant and crude and erudite all on the same page. Moore tackled Shakespeare's King Lear right into the mud and gave it a 'right good sodding'. ![]() Bawdy Bard Brutally but Brilliantly Burlesqued ![]() In-Between Days by Teva Harrison5/23/2023 ![]() Harrison tells her readers wisely that hope is dangerous but crucial – this sentiment seeps out of the pages. When Teva Harrison was first diagnosed with terminal breast cancer at the tender age of 37, she found that writing and drawing helped her deal with many psychological aspects of her prognosis and treatment.
